Compositions like these are difficult because you can't really rely on silhouette for clarity. You'd have to master different types of pencil strokes to render different types of material (which is bone? which is muscle?), but most importantly, it is very difficult to suggest a visual hierarchy in foreshortening: which bit is in front of which? That's usually solved with lighting and shadows, both a blessing and a curse you have to consider.
